In 1974, a different album by Astor Piazzolla was recorded, together with Gerry Mulligan on saxophone. Years of Solitude is one of the composer's most beautiful melodies and is recorded on that album: "Summit".
Astor wrote this letter to a friend after the "Summit" recording:
“November 1974, Rome. I already recorded the LP with Mulligan. You have no idea what that was like. We looked like two possessed. On the other hand, when you listen to it, you will realize something that I always maintained. It doesn't matter what country or culture you represent; If you make music, and seriously, you always find a common language to understand each other. I think that instead of politicians, people should use musicians in the United Nations to get along better.”
I wrote this arrangement for my own use, but it ended up being played by many colleagues in Argentina and other countries. The cello summarizes the bandoneon and saxophone melodies in a single part, with a personal touch.
